Mojang Offered Up Scrolls Trademark, Bethsoft Said "No"
Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson claims Bethesda declined his offer to alter the Scrolls name and open up the trademark, so he's not sure as shootin just why his society is being sued.
Bethesda v. Mojang hasn't even pulled into the courthouse parking lot yet, only to much of the public the narrative is already written: big, money-sucking corporation with a bored licit section drops the causa hammer on the tiny cat, who has to roll over and take it because information technology's fair-minded too damned expensive to campaign for what's right. It's a solid David-and-Goliath tale for the gamer set, with the one fly ball in the ointment being that IT might not be entirely veracious.
Equally Kotaku noted yesterday, Bethesda's parent company Zenimax Media power just have a good argue for putting its 'kickers happening. Mojang's trademark application connected "Scrolls" is improbably panoramic and could potentially put away the company in a position to bring legal process against Zenimax/Bethesda over its use of the name in future Elderberry bush Scrolls titles. Perhaps an unlikely scenario; maybe not.
But in response to that report, Notch claimed on his blog that helium'd already tried to soothe any such fears Bethesda might have. "We realized we should apply for the trademark 'Minecraft' to protect our brand. When doing thus, we also transmitted in an application for 'Scrolls'," he wrote. "When Bethesda contacted us, we offered both to change the name to 'Scrolls: [just about subtitle]' and to give up the trademark."
"They refused on both counts," he continued. "Whatsoever reason they have for suing us, it's not a revere of the States having a trademark happening the global 'Scrolls,' as we've offered to give that up."
The enigma deepens! Or maybe not. A Pabst and a fist-pound might be enough to seal the dole out on the streets but courts stimulate somewhat more stringent requirements when it comes to decisive who controls what. Mojang may very well have offered, in completely sincerity, to walk away from the "Scrolls" trademark merely from Bethesda's perspective, that only may not bear been well enough.
